e-Hygrometer update

Five months ago, I told you about the plans for a wifi-powered hygrometer. Last weekend, I got my very own from my buddy Bjorn, who is the mastermind behind all this.

It’s a simple, sleek black box with a power chord on one side and a sensor on the other:

The idea behind the external sensor is that you can put the sensor in your humidor while keeping the electronics out. The sensor itself is of Swiss origin. It is extremely precise and has very little drift over time, which means you never have to calibrate it:

Getting the thing into my humidor was not easy. Since it’s a converted wine cooler, it’s pretty much sealed shut on all sides, except for one ventilator opening which blows cool air into the cabinet. I had to take apart the entire thing, both at the back, where the cooling technology is, and inside, where the cedar casing is. Maybe there is something to be said for a battery -powered option:

Still, after an hour or so, the first readings were logged onto the Cigar Profiler server. Humidity outside the humidor is pretty high at the moment:

After a day or so, the humidor had stabilized and it was time for a comparison between the new e-Hygrometer and a calibrated regular hygrometer. The readings were spot-on:

The next day, I moved the e-Hygrometer to a different section of the humidor and compared it to another calibrated one:

As you can see from these pictures, regular hygrometers are wildly inaccurate but the Cigar Profiler e-Hygrometer is very precise. By now, four days later, the system logged over 1,000 readings (one every four minutes). With that kind of data, it’s time to develop some nifty charts…
